50 STARS, VIETNAM WAR PERIOD, CROCHETED, MASONIC RELATIONSHIP, 1963: 50 star American National flag, knitted from cotton thread with needlepoint, appliqued, cotton stars. The flag was made during the Vietnam War, in June 1963, for Eugene H. Keeney, of Royal Oak, Michigan. Keeney was a member of the Royal Oak Lodge #464 of the Free and Accepted Masons. A small tag with typed and printed lettering accompanies this flag, and it may be that the flag was for use in the Masonic Temple. Verbal provenance from the owner of this flag relates that Keeney was a Vietnam War veteran. It could be that his tour was cut short by an injury, the war having started in 1961. Or may be that Keeney?s service was not overseas. Some people are unaware as to the importance the Masons in early American. Of all the early fraternal groups, the Freemasons have the most profound effect on the growth of our nation. Its members included no less than 15 American Presidents, among them; George Washington, James Monroe, Andrew Jackson, James Polk, James Buchanan, Andrew Johnson, James Garfield, William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, Warren Harding, Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Linden Johnson, and Gerald Ford. It is therefore no surprise that the ?Eye of God?, an important Masonic symbol is present on a Masonic pyramid on the reverse of our dollar bill. The 50 star became official in 1960, and is still our current flag today. Mounting: The flag has been hand stitched to 100% cotton rag mat and placed in an early surface, walnut and gilt frame, that dates to the 1860-1880 period. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is u.v. protective.
