46 POINTY STARS WITH ORDERED CHANGE IN STAR POSITIONING, OKLAHOMA STATEHOOD, 1907-1912:

46 star American national parade flag, printed on cotton. Note how the rather pointy stars are arranged in a linear fashion, yet vary greatly in their vertical alignment. The stars in the two inner-rows alternate, point-up, point down. In the next two rows they point in the 11:00 position, and in the top and bottom rows they point in the 1:00 position. This adds a nice excellent element of folk quality to its design.

While the canton has faded from what would have been Navy blue, its current, dusty blue coloration shows its age gracefully, is very attractive, and adds further visual appeal.

When the number of stars varies from row-to-row, but the length of the rows stays the same, any number of secondary patterns may emerge. Note here how they work outward from a vertical oval of six stars in the center, which is surrounded by two consecutive sets of parenthesis-shaped star formations, then terminates in bracketed formations at the far right and left sides.

The 46th state, Oklahoma, joined the Union on November 16th, 1907, during Teddy Roosevelt's presidency. Roosevelt had many friends in the Oklahoma Territory from his Rough Rider days, and pushed it through to statehood. The 46 star flag became official on July 4th, 1908 and remained so until July 3rd, 1912. Many 46 star flags were made earlier, however, in great anticipation of the future addition of the state, which had previously been appointed to Native Americans.

Mounting: The solid oak frame has an acid-washed surface and dates to the period between 1890 and 1910. The flag has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton rag mat. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is u.v. protective.

Condition: There is minor foxing and staining throughout, accompanied by significant fading of the canton to an attractive, dusty blue coloration. There are minor tears along the hoist where the flag was tacked to its original staff. There is minor fabric loss in the top, fly end corner. Fabric of similar coloration was placed behind the flag for masking purposes and to strengthen the flag's color against the white background. The flag presents wonderfully. Many of my clients prefer early flags to show their age and history of use.
