Description....:
46 POINTY STARS WITH SCATTERED POSITIONING AND AN INTERESTING SECONDARY PATTERN, OKLAHOMA STATEHOOD, 1907-1912:

46 star American national parade flag, printed on cotton. The stars are arranged in rows, but vary greatly in their vertical positioning. Note how upper-most point of the stars in the top and bottom rows tilt towards 1:00, then the next two rows have stars with various orientations, while the two center rows have stars that vary point-up, point-down throughout, a characteristic that I term "dancing" or "tumbling". Also note how the stars have arms that are more narrow and pointy than most examples. Together these features add strong visual qualities to the flag's design.

When examining a parade flag that has rows of stars that are equal in length, but have different numbers of stars in them, a secondary pattern sometimes develops. In this case there is a secondary pattern that is based on an oval center and works outward. One can never be sure whether this was intentional or accidental, but it does add an interesting folk element that increases its desirability.

The 46th state, Oklahoma, joined the Union on November 16th, 1907, during Teddy Roosevelt's presidency. Roosevelt had many friends in the Oklahoma Territory from his Rough Rider days, and pushed it through to statehood. Many 46 star flags were made earlier, however, in great anticipation of the future addition of Oklahoma, which had previously been appointed to Native Americans. The 46 star flag became official on July 4th, 1908 and remained so until July 3rd, 1912.

Mounting: The flag has been stitched to cotton rag mat and placed in a solid walnut frame with a gilded liner that dates to the period between 1870 and 1890. Spacers keep the textile away from the glass, which is u.v. protective.
