Description....:
44 STARS, WYOMING STATEHOOD, 1890-1896, A VISUALLY GRAPHIC EXAMPLE:

44 star American national flag with a rather interesting configuration of rows that zigzags across its navy blue canton. This unusual staggered row pattern, accompanied by the fact that stars themselves are unusually pointy and are placed in various positions on their vertical axis, make for an uncommonly visual flag. Not also how the rows fail to line up perfectly, which adds another interesting element to its overall presentation.

The canton and stripes of the flag are made of a wool bunting which has been pieced with treadle stitching. The double-appliqued, cotton stars are treadle-sewn with a lineal stitch. There is a heavy cotton sleeve with two brass grommets.

The 44th state, Wyoming, gained statehood on July 10th, 1890. Many flag makers would have began to add a 44th star to their flags on or before that day, and the 44 star flag would have generally seen use until the addition of Utah in 1896.

Mounting: The flag has been hand-stitched to 100% silk organza on every seam for support, as well as throughput the star field. Silk organza is a nearly weightless fabric that is entirely natural, very strong, and supports the early fabric of the flag so that stress on it is minimized when it hangs in the frame. Then flag was then hand-sewn to a 100% cotton background, black in color. The black fabric was washed to remove excess dye. An acid-free, dye-setting agent was added to the wash o further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. The mount is backed with archival material and placed in a black painted, hand-gilded and distressed Italian molding. The front is u.v. protective plexiglas.

Condition: There is minor mothing, but there are no significant condition issues.
