Description....:
38 Star American National Flag from the G.H. Neeld Post of the G.A.R.. The G.A.R, or Grand Army of the Republic, was the veteran?s association for the Union Army. It was similar to today?s Legion or VFW, but more fraternal in nature, like the current Moose or Elks lodges. Members dressed in Civil War uniforms for ceremonial purposes and parades. The design of this flag was likely intended to mimic that of Civil War infantry battle flags carried by the Union, which were of similar size (6? x 6?). These were purposely square in shape to reduce wind drag when fast movement was essential. Flags made in this size in the late 19th century, after the war?s end, were most typically found in G.A.R. halls. The most outstanding aspects of the flag?s design are its vertical oriented canton and gold painted lettering. The vertical canton is also typical of Civil War battle flags, and adds tremendous folk appeal. Across the 3rd and 4th red stripes there is wording in paint made from gold salts. It reads: ?G.H. Neeld Post, No. 376?. Writing of any type on a flag is a highly rare feature and adds significantly to its value. The stripes and canton of the flag are constructed of treadle-sewn wool bunting. The cotton muslin stars are also treadle-sewn, and there is a fringe of twisted gold wool around the flag?s perimeter on 3 sides. The canvas sleeve has 5 brass grommets, through which blue wool ties are threaded. The 38th state, Colorado, received its statehood on August 1st, 1876. This was just 28 days after the official Centennial Celebration, which took place on July 4th in Philadelphia. Although 37 was the official star count in 1876, flag-making was a competitive venture, and no one wanted to be making 37 star flags when others were making 38?s. It is for this reason that 38 and 13 are the two star counts most often seen at the Centennial Celebration. Condition: Excellent. There is only the most minor mothing.
