Description....:
35 Star American National Flag in an unusually small size for the period. This is probably a government contract made flag, although no makers marks are present. The name Lydecker is hand written in lead pencil on each side of the hoist. This is most certainly the name of a previous owner. West Virginia was admitted into the Union on June 20th, 1863, and this flag was used during the closing years of the Civil War. The stars of the flag all point upward and are laid out in a rectilinear fashion. They are made of cotton muslin, are hand-sewn and double appliqued. Both the canton and the stripes are constructed of wool bunting and are treadle-sewn. The canton and the 5th red stripe are pieced with two lengths of bunting. There is a canvas sleeve with three brass grommets. Mounting: The flag has not yet been pressed or mounted. There are at least 3 display options: (1) For $100, a cotton or wool sleeve can be hand-sewn to the reverse of the flag, through which a metal rod can be inserted for hanging. This option is by far the least costly. (2) For an additional cost, it can be conserved and afterwards encased in a museum quality, ultra violet light protective, acrylic box. (3) It can be conserved and framed in a traditional molding. Prices of options 2 & 3 vary by size of flag and the amount of labor required. If you wish to reduce the size of the display, most large flags can be folded in a variety of manners to create a smaller display. Condition: The flag?s condition is remarkable for the period. There is very minor mothing and a very minor separation at both the top and bottom the hoist. There are very minor holes with stitch repairs.
