Description....:
13 STARS, A RARE EXAMPLE WITH A GOLD, CIVIL WAR, UNION ARMY VETERAN'S OVERPRINT, SCHUYLKILL, COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, CA 1900-1913:

13 star American national parade flag, printed on coarse, glazed cotton, with a canted, gold-inked overprint that reads: "Allison Brother's Post G.A.R". 13 star parade flags such as this one are rarely encountered with overprinted text. Gold text is even more rare. The flag is of a type commonly known to have been produced for the 1876 centennial of American independence. Many of these flags were left over after the event and so were sold or distributed years afterward. Based upon the very few known examples with similar gold text, and the prevalence of G.A.R. overprinted flags (particularly one variety known to have been printed on the same type of flag), it is likely that this particular example was overprinted for the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg in 1913. This was the first major "Blue & Grey" reunion, when men from both the North and the South came together in great numbers to remember their service and honor the fallen.

As a group, parade flags with generic G.A.R. overprints are somewhat common. Parade flags with overprints from particular chapters of the G.A.R., like this one, are more scarce.

The Allison Brothers Post (No. 144) was located in Port Carbon, Pennsylvania in rural, Schuylkill, County, in the Southeast quadrant of the state. The G.A.R., or Grand Army of the Republic, was the primary association for Civil War veterans of the Union Army. Founded in 1866, it was similar to today's American Legion or V.F.W., but more fraternal in nature.

The flag presently survives as one-of-a-kind among known examples.

Mounting: The paint-decorated, ebonized and gilded American frame dates to the period between 1910 and 1920. The flag has been hand-stitched to 100% cotton rag mat. Spacers keep the textile away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.

Condition: There is very minor foxing and staining, but there are no serious condition issues.
